A consequence of neglecting health problems in developing countries?

According to the CDC, Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is part of the same family of viruses as smallpox. Therefore, monkeypox symptoms are like smallpox symptoms but milder and rarely fatal.

The global infection rate is 6,027 cases from 59 countries, with CDC reporting 600 in 34 U.S states. There have been three deaths, all in African nations. Although the disease comes with a meager mortality rate, our society has yet to bounce back from the impact of COVID-19. While western countries tackle the effects of these outbreaks, it becomes impossible to neglect the link between poverty and poor health worldwide.

As a missionary who served in various developing nations, I witnessed the need for a proper health care infrastructure in these parts of the world. It is easy to neglect such issues when they are not on one’s radar, but it becomes a priority when they appear on your doorsteps. It is incumbent upon our political and healthcare leaders to develop effective ways to fight against these outbreaks before it hits our doorsteps. While we wait for a viable solution, there is a loud cry for grassroots movements and organizations to effect change in our communities, slowing the hemorrhage of innocent lives globally.

Covid-19 has shown the world the importance of a valid diagnosis, predicting disease severity, monitoring disease progression in patients with infectious diseases, and the vital role of Pathology and Laboratory medicine worldwide. As a result, to position our society on a path of health care reform, we must work collectively to train and educate young minds for the road ahead. Therefore, it is an objective of Labademic to spearhead the improvement of laboratory medicine in Africa and other developing nations through education and job placement. ~Chiemela Nwaobasi
